Volunteer Spotlight: Pat Lohse

September 8, 2025

In 1994, animal lover Pat Lohse was looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of animals. She began volunteering for HSMO and is still involved 31 years later.

In her three-plus decades volunteering, she’s done a little bit of everything, including walking dogs at the old Macklind Avenue shelter, which was located across the street from the current building.

In 1995, she started participating in the foster program and has fostered countless mama dogs and their puppies in the years since then.

“Fostering is very rewarding,” she says. “Whether they are too young, sick or need socialization, it’s something the whole family can be involved with.”

These days, Pat can be found in the gift shop, helping adopters shop for their new family additions. She and her dog SanDee (who was adopted from HSMO three years ago) also help with Humane Education programs.

“We both enjoy teaching compassion and empathy to kids and adults,” Pat says.

As of August 28, 2025 Pat has logged 34,752.5 hours volunteering with HSMO. We are so grateful for her years of dedication to helping animals in need get the second chance they deserve!

“The staff and volunteers I’ve met in the last 31 years are very special people,” she says. “There is a volunteer opportunity for everyone at both locations. You won’t know until you try!”
