Volunteer Spotlight: Decorative Concrete Resurfacing

June 6, 2024

Lisa O’Hern and her husband Kevin started Decorative Concrete Resurfacing more than four decades ago. Over the years, their business has become a successful one, but their employees can only work in temperatures over 40 degrees due to the nature of the concrete. Lisa and Kevin wanted to be able to keep paying their team in the winter months, so they came up with an idea.

“When I looked for charities that could be a good fit for them and their skill set, HSMO popped into my head because I’m a dog lover,” Lisa says.

She made a call, and the volunteer department at HSMO welcomed the idea of having additional strong, capable dog walkers. Lisa went back to her team and told them they could take the winter months off, but if they wanted to continue to work, she would pay them to use that time to help out at the shelter.

“The first year we did that, we had four guys participate,” Lisa says. “They came back and had funny stories and had a great time getting to know the dogs. That was enough for more of them to participate the following winter.”

Decorative Concrete Resurfacing employees have been spending time at the Macklind shelter the past two winters and have been a huge help to the staff and volunteers. This past winter, Lisa said there were six that helped out.

“Lisa’s team was a major help in the Adoption Center over the winter” says Amy Edsell, adoption center manager. “The guys helped ensure everyone was getting cleaned in a timely manner and provided some much-needed TLC and enrichment for the animals. The Adoption Center staff members are very grateful that such a hard-working group of people was willing to dedicate their time to the animals needing homes.”
