RESCUE UPDATE | 106 Puppies & Dogs Receiving Treatment

Last week, our Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) rescued 106 puppies and dogs from inhumane conditions and substandard breeders. Since then, we’ve taken in 85 additional animals as strays, rescues or owner surrenders. We remain dedicated to accepting 100% of homeless pets that come to our doors. Our shelter staff and veterinary team have been working tirelessly to treat every one of them, and will continue providing compassionate care no matter how long it takes.

Here’s how the puppies and dogs are doing:

• Our ACT rescued 38 neglected dogs from a breeding operation in Harrison County. Six puppies were discovered crowded into a rusty crate, covered with fleas and suffering bacterial infections. Hank (first image) and his siblings are now in foster care where they can rest and recover. In addition to treating their infections, the puppies will need routine vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries once they are weaned.
• Two dogs were picked up from Pettis County after being abandoned by their owners. One (second image) is extremely thin, with a “body condition score” of 1 – the lowest possible rating, and a clear sign of abusive negligence. Both animals will require a nutritious diet to regain their strength and begin looking for permanent homes. Despite their extreme suffering, both dogs have displayed a friendly, forgiving disposition and are expected to make a full recovery.
• At the request of the National Mill Dog Rescue and BISSELL Pet Foundation, we transported 33 puppies and dogs to our St. Louis and Maryland Heights facilities. Various ages, sizes and breeds of dogs were recovered. We expect to make them available for adoption on a case-by-case basis after they have been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarians. Many are unsocialized and likely to need deeper evaluations by our animal behavior team.

Some pups are ready to find a forever home! On Thursday, October 12, shelter veterinarians approved the first batch of puppies and dogs for adoption. More will become available as they recover. For updates, potential adopters can visit hsmo.org/adopt.
