Classroom Pets
HEY KIDS, Does your classroom have
a pet? Remember, all animals have feelings. Your classroom
pet might be unsure of so many children and frightened.
Your teacher has established rules and regulations
for the care of the pet, but to avoid injury to you
and your class pet, please share these suggestions
with your teacher and classmates:
ALL ANIMALS SHOULD ALWAYS
BE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND KINDNESS
- Animals should be handled only with the teacher's
permission and under the teacher's supervision.
- Animals should not be disturbed when sleeping
or eating. Students should be taught to respect
the animal's right to quiet time.
- Students should never stick fingers in the cage.
- Before picking up an animal, students should always
prepare the animal by talking to it and allowing
it to smell their hands.
- Animals should be picked up and held with two
hands. They should always be made to feel secure
while being held.
- Students need to be calm and quiet when in the
presence of an animal.
- The animal should never be given treats without
the teacher's approval.
- Animals taken out of their cages for exercise
must never be left unattended.
Remember, your classroom pet
has feelings, too. Practice the Three Cs:
Be Consistent, Conscientious and Compassionate with
his care.
